Muscle “knots”, which are also referred to as myofascial trigger points, are tight, tender points within the muscle which cause and contribute to pain within the body. These tender points are found all over the body, but will mainly affect the neck, shoulders, back and calf muscles. While experts tend to disagree on exactly what these “knots” are, most will agree that they are caused by a variety of different issues. Stress, muscle tension or overuse, slouching while sitting, lack of sleep, loss of flexibility, anxiety and chronic dehydration can all contribute to create these painful trigger points.
Massage, keeping active, stretching (particularly after exercise), not sitting for extended periods or slouching over a computer or phone, drinking plenty of water and maintaining a good sleep pattern will all aid in avoiding muscle “knots”.
Muscle “knots” can be effectively treated with deep tissue massage and dry needling. Massage helps break down these painful points while also increasing the flow of blood and oxygen to the affected area, while also helping to maintain healthy, flexible muscles. Research has shown that dry needling causes favourable biochemical changes within the body which release the trigger points and reduce pain. Dry needling essentially aids the body in healing itself by increasing nutrient rich bloodflow to the affected area while also encouraging the release of pain killing endorphins from the brain.
